There are several different types of directories to which you can submit your site.
Each has a different set of benefits and issues.
Major Directories
There are three top tier directories —
Yahoo! Directory (not to be confused with Yahoo! Search),
Open Directory Project (ODP, or DMOZ as it’s also known),
and Business.com.
Yahoo! Directory Submit
There’s a $299 annual recurring fee. At this cost, you’ll have to decide
whether it’s worth it, according to your own circumstances.
The value of a Yahoo! listing isn’t the amount of traffic it will drive (which is relatively little)
but the quality in-pointing link it provides. New sites looking to establish some critical
link popularity may find value in a Yahoo! listing. Established sites may not receive the
same value for a listing.
Of course, paying the fee does not guarantee that your site will be accepted. Yahoo!
will notify you either way — accept or reject. If you’re rejected, you’ll have 30 days to
fix the problems and appeal the process.
Remember, you have lots of other ways to build a good inbound links program, including
links from other directories. Yahoo! is not a “must.”
Open Directory (DMOZ)
Open Directory is a free place to list your site. Patience, though, is definitely a virtue!
This directory is maintained by community editors who evaluate sites for inclusion.
Note: Don’t put your monetization on hold waiting for a listing. It could take six months
or more (if you ever are listed). And don’t worry if you’re rejected. DMOZ is not the only
source of quality in-pointing links.
Business.com
Business.com, like Yahoo!’s directory, charges an annual fee of $299 USD for inclusion.
So, as with Yahoo!, decide whether you site needs the credibility boost that a listing in
Business.com will give it.
To submit to Business.com, you need to start from the category where you want your site listed.
